Market on Market Street is a space to grow and build lasting roots in Downtown Durham where creativity, equity, and community thrive.
A Complete Program
Market on Market blends in-person retail with hands-on coaching. It allows entrepreneurs to test, iterate, and scale with customers; then turn those insights into sustainable operations.
By the end of the program, our businesses will have the data, systems, and confidence to secure a long-term lease or expand their retail footprint.
The Program Includes
- A turnkey micro-retail space inside a shared storefront on Market Street in the center of downtown Durham.
- Below market-rate rent that includes utilities, parking, and programming.
- 1:1 business coaching with an experienced coach to sharpen pricing, merchandising, operations, and growth strategy
- Peer cohort and community for collaboration, problem-solving, and accountability
- Tailored programming and workshops on retail operations, inventory, visual merchandising, storytelling, and more
- Shared promotions, marketing support, and events that drive foot traffic and awareness for every brand in the space
The Process
Apply now for next year. Our first round of tenants have been selected, but Downtown Durham Inc. will continue to accept interest forms and applicants for 2027.

Who is eligible?
Eligible businesses include those selling retail and packaged goods. We cannot currently accommodate service businesses and those who may need ovens, refrigeration or food/beverage preparation on-site.
Requirements
- Have been in operation for at least two (2) years
- Be willing to be in the store, or have paid staff present, at least four (4) days a week
- Have a business tax ID and a retail-based business
- Submit a completed application
If Accepted
- Commit to the full 12-month lease term
- Provide a POS system and process transactions (mobile Square Reader is fine)
- Supply your own retail display infrastructure
- Obtain basic business liability and property insurance for your space
- Report monthly transaction and sales numbers (confidential) to the program team
