Downtown residents and visitors now have public access to Wi-Fi in six different spaces across the district, funded by a $100,000 grant from Google. This five-year pilot program is designed to enhance digital connectivity and encourage foot traffic, while also providing an extra amenity for those enjoying downtown’s green spaces.
How It Works
Each bench provides a 300-foot radius of free Wi-Fi coverage using a 4G router connected to the T-Mobile network.
Users can easily connect by going to their Wi-Fi settings and selecting “Downtown Durham Free Wifi.” Users will be granted access after accepting the Terms & Conditions.
DDI will monitor the networks to assess usage patterns, identify high-traffic areas and track technical performance. This data will help guide future improvements and potential expansions of the program.
