Black Wall Street
Walk along Black Wall Street, Durham’s historic African-American business district that thrived along Parrish Street in the early 1900s. It was home to powerhouse institutions like North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and Mechanics & Farmers Bank. Today, it’s lined with plaques, signs, statues and murrals to honor its rich history.
Hayti Heritage Center
The Hayti Heritage Center is a cultural enrichment and arts education facility that promotes cultural understanding through diverse events, activities and programs that preserve the heritage and embrace the experiences of Americans of African descent.
Pauli Murray Center
Learn about and honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, who was a human rights activist, legal scholar, author, labor organizer, poet, Episcopal priest, multiracial Black, and LGBTQ+ Durhamite. The Pauli Murray Center is anchored in her childhood home on Carroll Street.
Stagville State Historic Site
Historic Stagville preserves the remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. Stagville is dedicated to interpreting the lives, culture, and labors of enslaved people on the Bennehan-Cameron plantation. Learn about the history with outdoor guided tours Tuesdays through Saturdays.
