[Durham, NC] — [August 31, 2026] — The International Downtown Association (IDA) announced the appointment of Nicole Thompson as its new Chair, succeeding Kris Larson, LPM, AICP after his two-year term. Thompson will lead the organization’s board as it continues its mission of supporting downtown, city center, and urban district leaders around the world.
Thompson brings over a decade of experience in economic development, place management, and downtown revitalization, serving as the President and CEO at Downtown Durham, Inc. Throughout her career, she has led major revitalization initiatives and championed public-private partnerships that transformed underused urban corridors, while advising municipalities on inclusive economic growth strategies.
“I’m honored to take on this role at such a pivotal moment for cities everywhere. Downtowns are the heart of our communities, and I look forward to working alongside the IDA team, board and our members to help them thrive.” said Thompson.
“Nicole’s deep expertise, ability to drive connection throughout the membership, and proven leadership make her exactly the right person to guide the association into its next chapter,” said IDA President & CEO, David Downey, IOM, CAE. As Chair, Thompson will work closely with IDA’s board of directors and staff to advance the organization’s priorities, including supporting downtown recovery and reinvestment, advancing best practices in place management, and expanding IDA’s global network of urban leaders.
