In 2000, Downtown Durham, Inc. (DDI), working with the city and county, completed a master plan for downtown Durham. This was an intensive process that provided guidance in downtown’s growth and revitalization. Downtown has changed and grown a lot over the last 23 years. This growth, coupled with a global pandemic that has had unexpected impacts on all downtowns and cities, means a new downtown Durham plan is needed.
The Downtown Durham Blueprint: 2035 will take a slightly different approach than previous master plans. The blueprint will look at the challenges that must be addressed to ensure we keep the authentic vibe and feel of downtown while also supporting growth and development that strengthens downtown Durham’s unique cultures.Â
To identify some of these challenges, DDI circulated a 22-question survey asking the community for their experiences and thoughts about downtown. The responses have been aggregated by the steering committee to guide the scope of the project going forward and to create the RFP.
Over the next year, we will gather additional community feedback as we finalize the blueprint. Complete the Blueprint Update form below to stay in the loop on the process and to learn about additional opportunities for input.
DDI is seeking a qualified professional planning firm or firms to facilitate a community planning process that culminates in the development of a blueprint for downtown Durham.
