Application Developer

Role Overview
The Institute for Medical Research, (IMR), a private nonprofit organization that conducts cutting edge research for the Durham Veterans Affairs Health Care System (DVAHCS), is seeking to hire an Application Developer.

The successful candidate would be employed in the laboratory of Dr. Stephen Freedland, a nationally recognized leader in urology research. The Freedland Urology Research Group primarily examines prostate and bladder cancer in veterans with a particular focus on lifestyle, race, and risk stratification, and is supported by numerous federal grants as well as leading industry sponsors.

The successful candidate will be part of a highly productive and dynamic team of researchers. The Application Developer is involved with the collection and management of large amounts of clinical data and will need to learn about clinical research methods and clinical presentations of urologic diseases. Applicants must have the ability to: work independently in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and manage the workflow of multiple projects, sit for long periods in front of computers, and be fluent in English.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems/Technology, or other relevant field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a data analyst, database programmer, or other relevant work that aligns with the qualifications of this job, will be considered in lieu of education.
  • Knowledge of database theory and design
  • Highly organized, detailed oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks, changing priorities, and deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to solve problems, troubleshoot, and independently learn new skills
  • Capacity to communicate both written and orally with a diverse array of research team members

Desirable Qualifications

  • Practical experience or relevant coursework in Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, VBA, T-SQL or similar relational database management systems
  • Experience using the Microsoft Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate), or similar BI platforms, for data entry, business intelligence dashboards, and/or data visualization
  • Experience managing source control using Git or other distributed version control system
  • Experience in Jira project management software
  • Experience with Python or other object-oriented programming languages
  • Experience with web development
  • Interest in the medical oncology field, and/or coursework in biology, anatomy, and related fields

Tasks Include:

Database Application Front-end Development

  • Design, build, and maintain data entry applications using Microsoft Access
  • Assist with migration from Microsoft Access frontend apps to web-based platform
  • Add/remove features from data entry applications upon request
  • Integrate user feedback and testing into database front-end designs

Database Application Back-end Development

  • Contribute to the maintenance and expansion of relational databases of clinical data
  • Assist in writing complex SQL scripts and stored procedures for data processing/extraction
  • Develop back-end code for use in web-based applications
  • Integrate user feedback and testing into database back-end designs
  • Ensure data security including privacy protection, backups, etc.

ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load Data)

  • Access VA databases, repositories, and charts to extract relevant data and transfer to relational databases
  • Evaluate data efficacy and think critically about the data
  • Facilitate manipulation of data between different formats (excel, csv, etc.)

Document Work

  • Document work related to database and query design through the use of comments, codebooks, and good programming practices
  • Provide written, oral, and/or electronic status reports of assigned tasks
  • Use the Jira platform to manage workflow according to best practices of Agile software development, including time estimations, acceptance criteria approvals, and QA workflows

Business Analysis

  • Work with users to gather business requirements using user stories, demos, mockups and other communication tools

Collaborate with Team Members

  • Communicate with VA technology departments to address/resolve IT needs and problems
  • Coordinate with research coordinators to ensure all procedures adhere to HIPAA and IRB compliance
  • Participate in team meetings on a frequent and regular schedule
  • Create knowledge sharing presentations

Salary range: $60,000 – $80,000
