While in residence, Vonnie plans to continue work on his project "Mae in the Midst of a Summer," which recounts the unsolved murder of his maternal grandmother, Mae Ethel Turner, killed in 1996. Through an interactive zine, experimental film, and collaged works, combining photographs from childhood with present-day images, Vonnie seeks to imagine his grandmother's would-be-existence in the present. “Layers,” in the Durham Arts Council's Allenton Gallery, is a collection of monoprints by Ely Urbanski. Ely uses clothes as matrices of her prints. Clothes can become carriers of stories, identity, masks and judgements. Ultimately, they are material and non-material layers that cover humans. This project is an exploration of these layers.
