An event every week that begins at 11:00 am on Wednesday, repeating until July 3, 2019

While in residence, Vonnie plans to continue work on his project “Mae in the Midst of a Summer,” which recounts the unsolved murder of his maternal grandmother, Mae Ethel Turner, killed in 1996. Through an interactive zine, experimental film, and collaged works, combining photographs from childhood with present-day images, Vonnie seeks to imagine his grandmother’s would-be-existence in the present. Using two familial leather photo albums, Vonnie will also explore the role of the album in creating memory and meaning in Black families.

As part of his residency Vonnie will have 24/7 access to the 1500-square-foot Power Plant Gallery as his studio, plus a $750 stipend. The public is encouraged to engage with Vonnie during open studio hours. Vonnie will also curate a cinema art program as part of his ongoing Afro+ProjectionLAB, which screens finished and in-progress experimental films made by Black media artists.
