A lifelong vocalist, composer and audiophile, Lex moved into the DJing sphere in 2018 after spending over a decade in the NYC art rock scene. She had a 2 year weekly residency on Brooklyn’s The Face Radio and has now brought her musical passions to her new home of NC. Lex loves exploring the zones of deep, cerebral and soulful across the sonic spectrum, including deep techno, house, UK bass, garage, minimal, breaks and beyond.
A New York transplant, Johan’s style of driving techno blends tribal rhythms with evocative melodies and urban groove. Growing up in a “melting pot” had a profound effect on his style; the energy of Afro-Caribbean and Latin block parties that punctuated summer days stand out in every set. His goal is not to play the music you like, but to play the music you didn’t know you liked. He strives for perfection in every track, balancing hypnotic momentum with thought provoking atmosphere.
A Between2Clouds resident, Johan has played across NC supporting artists like Donald Glaude, Hector and Rafa Barrios to name a few. Johan also makes recurring appearances supporting Raleigh-based Subtek Music, Rabbit Whole Productions and Durham-based Dancegruv. He describes his music as having “bite” like a good Thai curry; you don’t wanna burn your eyebrows off, but you’re gonna feel it in your ears.
He’s had the opportunity to play and collaborate with incredible local creators and watch the scene grow and diversify, even as it weathered the pandemic. After 5 years of planning (and procrastination) he founded kinetic audio to create a space for artists to fully express themselves without the pressure of commercial expectations.
2’s love for finding, listening to, and sharing underground dance music began when they were but a wee creature in high school. He would spend hours looking through playlists of music online, label catalogues, and videos to create his own extensive and varied playlists almost daily. This hobby persisted over the next decade before they stumbled upon DJing. Within a year he began to produce his own dance music.
Within months of beginning to DJ, he got booked on underground festivals, local parties, was flown out to Yellowstone National Park to perform for a group of world travelers, was brought out to Salt Lake City to perform for a celebrity, and got butt naked for a headline techno set of a festival at a cabin in the woods.
The stories were only beginning.
He’s played from beach to high rise, middle of the woods running off generators to private parties for interesting groups of folks, silent discos for art museums to rave warehouses, his own parties and other… abnormal environments. This unique creature has experienced a lot and it has deeply influenced his highly curated, mostly house and techno DJ sets, which he’s increasingly getting the chance to share with more and more people.
