Welcome to the Black Southern Writers Conference, where we come together to celebrate the rich and diverse literary heritage of the southern griot. From November 10th to 12th, 2023, we invite you to join us in the vibrant city of Durham, North Carolina, for a three-day extravaganza of words, culture, and creativity. ✍️ Inspiring Keynote Speakers and Workshop Facilitators: Prepare to be inspired by renowned Black Southern writers such as Dasan Ahanu, Nikky Finney, Terrance Hayes, Destiny Hemphill, Zelda Lockhart, Kwame Mbalia, Mahogany L. Browne, Jay Ward, Tyree Daye, Monica Prince, Monet Marshall, and more!

*Morning & afternoon events on Friday at Duke University are FREE and open to the public* A poetry slam competition will be held at 7pm at the Duke Rubenstein Arts Center. Tickets will be available on the Duke Arts website Oct 10th or at the door.**

About the conference and its founders:
Founded by notable local poetry power couple, Eric Thompson, Khalisa Rae, and their advisors: Dasan Ahany, Crystal Simone Smith, Fred Joiner, CJ Suitt, and more. Griot and Grey Owl seeks to strengthen Black writers in craft, community, and career.
*Griot and Grey Owl conference tickets are open to Black writers, with special priority to writers in the southern region. Must be 21+
