Go-Go a Gojo: a World House Music Dance Party in Downtown Durham

June 24, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - June 25, 2023 @ 8:00 pm

$20.00 and Gojo by Goorsha
welcome you to a night of Afro House music.
Afro House is a dance music which began in South Africa and has now spread to be a global genre with several hubs of music producers crafting gorgeous music within the genre, particularly in South Africa (of course), Germany, Brazil, France, the UK, Mexico, and the USA. The music features gorgeous, triumphant vocals, a diversity of rhythms to move to, pounding kicks to drive you deeper within the sound, and an array of instruments from all over the world that tell a story. Great to dance to and listen to. Every DJ we booked both loves and has a unique library of Afro House and is genuinely excited to share it with y’all.
There are plenty of reasons why this experience is something worth diving into, so instead of throwing too much at ya, I’ll keep it to the main features:
*2 stages, both outside and inside, so you can bop around to where you feel most magnetized and inspired to be*Spaces to exist that are not on the dance floor, so you can hang out, chat, meet great folks, be coy with that person you brought that you’re into but won’t make it clear to them because by golly you’re too cool for that*Visual art to appreciate, purchase, and partake in!*The venue itself is an Ethiopian inspired and owned venue, that is also owned by the beautiful people that own and operate Goorsha, an Ethiopian restaurant on main street in Downtown Durham. This is what inspired putting this together!
This edition features: Steve Howerton!A staple of the east coast Afro House music scene. Not only does he select incredible, smooth, groovy, soul-fueling afro house music, he makes it too. We listed both an original and DJ mix of his below
His performance will include a few tracks with live vocals by Niya Wells! Niya WellsHer range is as eclectic as her own taste in melodies. She’s the perfect blend of rhythmic, classic sounds and pop beats that dare you not to dance.
She’s collaborated with some of the most innovative global artists, including Dutch Soulection signee, Jarreau Vandal, Brooklyn-based duo, Brasstracks, and German Nu disco outfit, Satin Jackets. STEVE HOWERTON ORIGINAL MUSIC: Howerton · DJ MIX: musical support:
2dreamagain []2’s love for finding, listening to, and sharing underground dance music began when they were but a wee creature in high school. He would spend hours looking through playlists of music online, label’s catalogues, and videos to create his own extensive and varied playlists almost daily. This hobby persisted over the next decade, before they stumbled upon DJing, only about a year after beginning to produce his own dance music.
Within a few months of beginning to DJ, he got booked on underground festivals, local parties, was flown out to Yellowstone National Park to perform for a group of world travelers, brought out to Salt Lake City to perform for an ex celebrity, and got butt naked for a headline techno set of a mini festival at a cabin in the woods.
The stories were only beginning.
From beach to high rise to middle of the woods running off generators to more private parties for interesting groups of folks to silent discos for art museums, to rave warehouses, for a lot of his own parties, and other.. abnormal environments, this unique creature has experienced a lot and it has deeply influenced his highly curated, mostly house and techno DJ sets, which he’s increasingly getting the chance to share with more and more people.
Let’s explore.—-
