Dreamroot is a band and musical collective from Durham, North Carolina. Their performance style combines pre-written and improvised sections, creating what Indy Week calls “one of the distinctive strains of the Durham jazz scene, melding R&B forms with modern jazz solos that all fit nicely into the length of a longish pop song.”

Dreamroot releases Leaf, an instrumental album drawing from their collective musical backgrounds and influences. Some of the songs feature acoustic arrangements while others venture into electric sounds. The group’s approach to music allows them to cover a broad range of styles. The record moves between jazz, soul, funk, rock and R&B. Leaf simultaneously honors sounds from the past and grooves into modern sounds, drawing inspiration from those icons who have walked the lines between genres, and shining with original brilliance from the collaborative creative efforts of all members of the band. This performance will showcase music from Leaf and will also offer a sneak peak into the band’s next project, featuring vocalist Mykl Hanna.

The band consists of Theous Jones (drums and percussion), Ittai Korman (acoustic and electric bass), Lynn Grissett (trumpet and tenor saxophone) and Joe MacPhail (piano and keyboards), and this performance will feature Mykl Hanna on vocals.
