DDI 2019 Speaker Series 1: Placemaking and Economic Development
August 28 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Innovative ideas that catalyze conversation and explore forward-thinking concepts for downtown Durham, followed by a networking reception.
Guest Speaker: Kendal Henry
Director of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program
Cities and economic development thrive on authenticity and character. Communities cultivate a sense of place through creativity, arts, culture and creative placemaking. Creative placemaking not only serves as a tool to attract residents and tenants, but it can simultaneously serve as a means for community dialogue and expression. From the perspective of a City of New York arts administrator and as an artist himself, Kendal Henry will introduce downtown Durham stakeholders to creative placemaking best practices. Durham is creative, it’s gritty and it’s real.
As the city emerges as an economic powerhouse, how can we ensure that it reflects the character that brought us here and is keeping us rooted in this city?
